Viridi, a manufacturer of battery energy storage systems, announced Monday that it has acquired the former Moxion Power production facility at Richmond's Portside Commerce Center.
Viridi hopes the new 40,000+ square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will create a West Coast presence for the battery manufacturer, expanding its business operations from New York to California.
In addition to the acquisition, Viridi has also secured a $9.3 million grant from the California Energy Commission.
"This grant from the CEC is a testament to the urgent need for advancing energy storage solutions that are both safe and scalable," said Jon M. Williams, CEO of Viridi. "Our expansion to the West Coast represents more than just growth—it's a pivotal step toward transforming California's energy landscape. We're honored to contribute to Governor Newsom's vision for a fully renewable and economically sustainable energy future.

Last summer, Moxion Power vaporized, leaving a hundred employees scrambling for employment and the not-yet-complete building's future occupancy unclear. The newly constructed commerce center was listed for lease in December, just as the finishing touches were being applied.

Viridi says its battery energy storage systems, or BESS, feature a proprietary anti-propagation architecture, eliminating the risks of propagation inherent in lithium-ion battery systems. Prioritizing safety, scalability, real-time remote monitoring, and advanced AI, and are available for both stationary and mobile use.
