Richmond police investigate first homicide of the year

A man shot to death in the Fairmede neighborhood Wednesday morning is Richmond’s first homicide of 2023.

The city’s gunshot detection system alerted police to 17 rounds fired in the 2400 block of Aberdeen Way, quickly followed by another activation of 12 more shots around 11:24 a.m. Police received 911 calls reporting the gunfire and a man down.

First responders found a victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound who died despite the efforts of medics. The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:38 a.m.

The victim was identified as Danny Barnes, 43, of Richmond.

Police investigated another shooting in the same block on February 27.

Faith in Action East Bay will hold a peace walk in Richmond in an effort to stop the violence on Friday, March 17. The walk begins at Crescent Park Apartments, the site of a February shooting.
