Teen killed in high-speed crash on Canal Boulevard
Updated: October 17, 2024, 2:29 p.m.
A high-speed collision early Monday morning on Canal Boulevard killed a 16-year-old girl and left her 11-year-old sister critically injured. Richmond Police Department officers responded to the scene at approximately 5:17 a.m. after receiving an automated alert from two iPhones signaling a severe crash.
The Contra Costa County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as Richmond resident Stephanie Anahi.
Upon arrival, officers found an Infiniti G35 severely damaged in the northbound lanes, according to a statement released by Richmond Police Department Community Engagement Manager Lynnelle Sanchez.
“Officers located one occupant, a 16-year-old female, ejected from the vehicle and deceased at the scene,” Sanchez said. "Officers located another occupant, an 11-year-old female, suffering from significant injuries. The 11-year-old victim was transported to a local trauma center, where she remains in critical condition."
Police have since shared an update about the 11-year-old's condition.
"We are happy to report that as of October 17, 2024, the 11-year-old victim remains in the hospital, but she is alert and talking and is expected to survive her injuries.
She is alert and talking and is expected to survive her injuries," said Lt. Donald Patchin.
Police said the Infiniti had been reported stolen from San Pablo two days earlier, on October 12. Evidence shows the Infiniti was traveling northbound on Canal Boulevard at a high rate of speed when it exited the roadway and struck two trees and a pole on the east curb line.
“Investigators determined that immediately after the collision, two 15-year-old male occupants of the vehicle fled the area. One was located at an area hospital after he sought treatment for injuries. The other was located at a residence in Richmond later that evening,” Sanchez said.
Police said the car’s occupants had provided conflicting statements about who was driving at the time of the collision. Investigators plan to follow up on additional leads, including DNA evidence, to determine which occupant was driving during the crash.
“We are saddened by this senseless tragedy that has resulted in the loss of such a young life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and the remaining victim who remains hospitalized,” Sanchez said.
