According to Chevron officials, a "hydrocarbon liquid" was released into the water Early Thursday morning, and a clean-up is underway.

Chevron said in a statement that the incident happened on the oil company's Long Wharf, triggering a response protocol and clean-up.

"On November 14, 2024, a diesel-type hydrocarbon liquid was not captured by our secondary containment systems and released into the water at our Richmond Long Wharf. Chevron immediately initiated its response protocol, stopped the release, and notified all applicable agencies. The released material is fully contained, there are no known impacts to wildlife or the shoreline, and air monitoring found no impact to the community," Chevron said.

According to the statement, the U.S. Coast Guard, California Fish and Wildlife, Contra Costa County, and Richmond Fire Department responded to the incident but have left the scene.

"They are no longer on site as they are pleased with the direction and resourcing of the response effort," Chevron spokesperson Caitlin Powell said.
