Sheriff: high-speed pursuit terminated before Carlson Boulevard crash
A high-speed pursuit involving a stolen vehicle was terminated before a collision at the intersection of Carlson Boulevard and Imperial Avenue on Saturday morning, according to a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office statement.
“The pursuit was terminated because of the speeds,” Sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said in a statement released Tuesday.
Shortly after the pursuit ended, the suspect’s vehicle collided with another car at the Carlson and Imperial intersection, Lee said.
The driver, identified as Edward Hamilton, 43, of Richmond, was apprehended at the scene and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility.
Lee said a deputy sheriff patrolling near North Richmond spotted a stolen vehicle on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at approximately 9:52 a.m.
"The driver initially stopped but then fled as the deputy attempted a traffic stop, leading the officer on a pursuit onto Carlson Boulevard," Lee said.
Hamilton faces multiple charges, including felony evading, vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, and probation violation. He is being held without bail.
“The two occupants of the vehicle that was struck were taken to a local hospital for minor injuries,” Lee said.
Richmond City Councilmember Sue Wilson, who represents District 5 where the collision occurred, clarified that the Richmond Police Department was not involved in the pursuit.
“I have confirmation from Chief French of the Richmond Police Department that the accident was the result of a pursuit by the County Sheriff’s Office,” Wilson said on social media.
Wilson expressed concern over the incident, noting that Richmond imposes restrictions on high-speed chases.
“Like many communities, Richmond has restrictions on high-speed chases, but evidently, our rules do not apply to officers from other jurisdictions like the County,” Wilson said, adding she would provide an update after she learns more about this incident and how to prevent it in the future.
