Richmond Police warn of rise in street robberies, offer safety tips

The Richmond Police Department has reported a spike in street robberies across the city, with approximately 30 incidents occurring since December 1.

According to Lt. Donald Patchin, the department’s public information officer, the robberies have occurred in various locations throughout the city.

“I don’t have any information at this time that they are linked,” Patchin said.

In November, there were 22 robberies reported in Richmond. In October 16 robberies were reported by the RPD.

In response, the department issued a public safety announcement urging residents to remain vigilant and offered the following crime prevention tips:

1. Stay Aware: Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when entering or exiting your vehicle.

2. Avoid Distractions: Stay off your phone and avoid distractions when in public places.

3. Trust Your Instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, trust your gut and move to a safer location.

4. Keep Valuables Out of Sight: Do not leave valuable items visible in your vehicle. Store them safely in your trunk or take them with you.

5. Travel in Groups: Whenever possible, try to walk with others, especially at night.

Police said if you see something suspicious, don’t hesitate to report it to the Richmond Police Department.
