Richmond mayor on strike in support of people of Gaza
At Tuesday night’s council meeting, Richmond Mayor Eduardo Martinez announced the mayor’s office will be closed Wednesday in solidarity with the people of Gaza.
Martinez said he stands in solidarity with the people of Gaza. He called for a permanent ceasefire and an end to apartheid.
“This week is a global strike in support of Palestine, and as part of that, the mayor’s office will be closed tomorrow in solidarity with the Palestinians,” Martinez said during the meeting.
On social media, Global strike for Gaza organizers have asked for people to walk out of school and work from January 21 to 28, as well as boycott companies that support the war in Gaza.
Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda called for the global strike to advocate for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
“The strongest governments and weapons manufacturers are supporting this genocide against my people, and you are our only hope! STRIKE globally and call for a ceasefire!” Owda wrote on Instagram.
“Strike, protest, stop the economic movements and make pressure on your countries to stand against this and stop it, if ISRAhell don’t find the financial and weapons support, or governments to hide their crimes they will be forced to stop the genocide! Go to the streets, protest and Globally strike for a week, (21-28) January! YALLA Brave and free people of the world, CEASEFIRE NOW!,” Owda wrote.
In October, The Richmond City Council was the first US city to pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire and accusing Israel of ethnic cleansing and collective punishment.
