Richmond leaders reaffirm sanctuary city status amid federal deportation threats

Richmond city officials have reaffirmed the city’s status as a sanctuary for immigrants in response to recent federal announcements about potential mass deportations while also highlighting deportation defense assistance resources.

In a joint statement issued Friday, Mayor Eduardo Martinez and City Manager Shasa Curl emphasized the city’s commitment to inclusion and community safety.

“Richmond has long been shaped by the hard work and dedication of immigrants, and we take pride in the diverse contributions of individuals and families from all walks of life. Our policies reflect our belief that all residents, regardless of immigration status, deserve to feel safe and supported in their community,” the statement said.

The mayor and city manager said the Richmond Police Department will continue prioritizing public safety and community trust, ensuring officers focus on keeping Richmond neighborhoods safe for everyone.

“The Richmond Police Department does not inquire about immigration status, and their commitment to uphold our sanctuary city policies remains unchanged,” the statement said.

Officials cited established legal precedents, including those reaffirmed by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and other state attorneys general, stating that state and local governments are not required to enforce federal immigration laws.

“Under the U.S. Constitution and established legal precedent, state and local governments, including our city, cannot be required to enforce federal immigration laws, and we will not allow fear and intimidation to erode the trust we have built within our community,” the statement said.

The city also encouraged residents to utilize resources such as Stand Together Contra Costa, a deportation defense initiative offering legal assistance, and a 24-hour hotline at 925-900-5151.

Richmond leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration with local organizations to support immigrant rights and maintain a welcoming environment for all community members.

“We will not compromise our commitment to protecting the civil rights and dignity of every individual who calls Richmond home,”  the statement said. “Together, we stand in solidarity with our immigrant neighbors and reaffirm our dedication to all residents in our city.
