Richmond City Councilmember Claudia Jimenez joined community members at Civic Center Plaza on Monday to protest what she called an “attack against our democracy” by the Trump administration.

“In just a month, Trump has fired thousands of civil servants across the country, defied judicial orders, and given [Elon] Musk unprecedented access to sensitive federal systems,” Jimenez said. “This is not the role of a President. This is an attack against our democracy and our country, and we cannot sit back and allow our futures to be held in the hands of the richest few.”

Former Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin also participated in the demonstration, encouraging residents to join a movement for change. At the event, she emphasized the importance of making voices heard for democracy and peace, referencing it as “Not My President’s Day.”

The rally was part of a nationwide protest on Presidents Day, with demonstrators in cities across the country condemning the administration’s policies and executive actions.
