Richmond's Historic Preservation Commission wins state award

The Richmond Historic Preservation Commission's Rooted in Richmond app has been chosen to receive the 2023 Governor's Historic Preservation Award.

The award is conferred by the California Office of Historic Preservation and California State Parks to acknowledge efforts to preserve and share the history of the state.

The Commission was notified on December 28 of the decision by State Historic Preservation Officer Julianne Polanco with a word of commendation.

"Please accept our sincere congratulations to you, the project team and the many other dedicated participants involved in the Rooted in Richmond project on achieving this well-deserved recognition," Polanco said in a statement to project lead Jonathan Haeber.

The award will be presented at a ceremony on Tuesday, February 27th from 1 PM to 4 PM in Sacramento. For those unable to attend the event, it will be live-streamed on YouTube and Facebook.

The Rooted in Richmond app is a virtual walking tour guide that teaches the user about the history of Richmond as they walk a 6-mile route through the city. In addition to guiding the user, the app provides information about the sites in the form of interviews and historical photographs.
