The Richmond Fire Department responded to a call for a vegetation fire on the Richmond Greenway Wednesday morning and arrived to find several structures also involved.

The fire broke out just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and burned multiple structures, sending bellows of dark smoke into the sky as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.

A Richmond firefighter said the fire was a significant incident along the Greenway near South 39th Street, describing the situation as a "vegetation fire that caused damage to multiple backyards, outbuildings, and residences."

Traffic was diverted around several blocks in the surrounding neighborhood as responders worked to extinguish the fire.

Simultaneously, there were reports of power outages in the area near the fire; however, Grandview could not confirm they were related to the fire.

The fire is currently under investigation.
