Police arrest suspect after gun fired during a child custody exchange
A man is facing attempted murder, child abuse, and domestic violence charges after reportedly firing a stolen firearm during a child custody exchange in the 3500 block of Nevin Avenue on Saturday night.
Richmond Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Donald Patchin said officers responded to reports of a shooting at 6:50 p.m. on Saturday.
“Officers determined that during a child custody exchange, an argument erupted,” Patchin said. “The male suspect produced a handgun and fired at the victim as she attempted to flee in her vehicle.”
The gunfire struck the woman’s vehicle, but none of the occupants, including three children, were injured.
The man fled on foot after officers located him in the 3600 block of Barrett Avenue, discarding a firearm, which officers recovered.
“Officers established a perimeter around the area the suspect fled, assisted by a drone and outside agencies. Officers searched the area and, with the assistance of one of our K9 teams, located the suspect hiding in a house’s crawl space,” Patchin said.
Police also learned the suspect’s firearm had been reported stolen. He is also facing charges of violating a restraining order, possession of a stolen and loaded firearm, along with several other misdemeanors.
“We are grateful that no one was harmed in this incident and that we were able to get this violent criminal off our streets,” Patchin said.
