One dead in double shooting at Bella Vista apartments overnight

A shooting late Sunday night at the Bella Vista apartment complex has left one person dead and another in critical condition, according to police.

Richmond officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 3400 block of Richmond Parkway, according to Lynnelle Sanchez, Public Information Officer for the Richmond Police Department.

“Upon arrival, they located two victims, each suffering from at least one gunshot wound. One victim succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Sanchez said. “The second victim was transported to a local trauma center and is in stable but critical condition.”

Sunday’s shooting does not appear to be connected to several recent shootings, including three fatalities last week.

Sanchez said the department’s investigations unit has stated that this incident does not appear to be related to the June 18 homicides on Pennsylvania Avenue or the June 19 homicide on Kelsey Street.

Police said no arrests have been made, and this is an active and ongoing investigation. 

Sunday’s shooting appears to be Richmond’s eighth homicide of the year, matching last year’s total. Last year, Richmond had only eight homicides total, the lowest homicide rate in 50 years.
