On the Richmond Pizza Trail: Mr. Pizza Man

Welcome to Grandview Independent's pizza quest, Richmond Pizza Trail. The GI staff has turned our sights on pizza while the Richmond Burrito Trail observes a 40-day hiatus.
The Richmond Pizza Trail got off to a good start with the North & East favorites Richmond Pizza House and Point Richmond's Raymond's Pizzeria.
This week, we visited Mr. Pizza Man on 24th Street and Nevin Avenue. The Mister has been serving up pies in Richmond since 1990, but even with its bright green and yellow exterior and a towering sign, finding the front door is a little tricky. (It is on the 24th Street side.)

We noticed Mr. Pizza Man's website touting its thick-crusted Chicago-style pizza, so with visions of Gino's East in our heads, we ordered a spinach and mushroom pizza as well as a regular pepperoni pizza.
"Twenty-twenty-five minutes," the pizza guy said after we placed our order. Uh oh.
There is just no way…
You can't…
It takes time to craft REAL Chicago pizza…
We arrived at Mr. Pizza Man, and within minutes, and our pizza was ready. We returned to Grandview Headquarters and flung open the pizza box lid in eager anticipation. Well, it was not a deep-dish pizza.

Unlike the flaky, almost pastry-like crusts of traditional Chicago deep-dish, this one is more bready with a crisp, toasted bottom and a fluffy interior with extra pizza sauce and oregano on top.
If you love a saucy pizza, you're in the right place. Mr. Pizza Man doesn't skimp on the sauce, layering it on in a way that complements the thick crust. It leans toward the herby and slightly sweet side, with a balance that isn't overly salty or acidic. The result is a pizza that feels rich but not overpowering, though garlic lovers might find it a bit subtle.
The crust achieves a beautiful golden-brown toast without burning, giving it a satisfying crunch when you bite in. Despite the thick sauce application, the structure holds, and you avoid the dreaded Soggy Bottom.

The classic pepperoni pizza with a golden-brown crust dusted with cornmeal is hand-tossed style with a thick, airy edge. Without the extra sauce cheese is well-melted and has a slightly browned, bubbly surface. The wide-slice pepperoni is generously distributed, slightly curled at the edges, and glistening with oil. The result is a meaty, well-balanced bite with almost every bite.
If you're looking for a solid late-night pizza option in Richmond, Mr. Pizza Man has you covered. They deliver until midnight on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends, making them one of the better options for those late-night cravings.
For those dining in or picking up, the service is efficient, with orders often ready faster than expected. Mr. Pizza Man manages to strike a balance, delivering pizzas that feel thoughtfully prepared. The dough has clearly had time to develop, rising properly and holding up to the sauce and cheese without getting soggy.
At around $46 for two pizzas, Mr. Pizza Man delivers strong value compared to some of the more expensive pizza spots in the area. The portions are generous, and the quality of ingredients feels fresh. We followed The Trail protocol, ordering and paying for our meals like regular diners to experience the restaurant as typical customers.

Whether you're craving a hearty slice at midnight or looking for an affordable yet high-quality option, Mr. Pizza Man delivers in more ways than one.
As the Richmond Pizza Trail continues, we’re eager to discover more standout pies across the city.
Let us know where to eat next, and check back next week for another stop on the trail as Grandview Independent attempts to find the best pizza in Richmond.
