On the Richmond Burrito Trail: Macdonald Avenue's Salsa Taqueria

Salsa Taqueria, with its handwritten signs, menudo on the menu, and a line to order, is a place that promises a unique dining experience. It's a taqueria that's very much alive inside, packed with mostly dudes eating soup and chatting over steaming bowls while music plays.

We've uncovered another gem — this time at Salsa Taqueria, nestled in the Richmond Shopping Center on Macdonald Avenue. The Super Grilled Chicken Burrito served hot and bursting with flavor, is yet another testament to Richmond's thriving burrito offerings, shaped by the skilled hands and rich traditions of those who share their food with the community.

Salsa Taqueria, with its handwritten signs, menudo on the menu, and a line to order, is a place that promises a unique dining experience. It's a taqueria that's very much alive inside, packed with mostly dudes eating soup and chatting over steaming bowls while music plays.

The star of the show? That tasty grilled chicken. Or maybe the creamy refried beans. It's a battle between the two. The beans are rich and flavorful, and the chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned, so the actual chicken flavor shines through.

Super Grilled Chicken Burrito
Salsa Taqueria's Super Grilled Chicken Burrito comes with tasty chips and salsas.

The supporting cast: gooey melted cheese, just enough Spanish rice, pico de gallo with finely diced tomato, and guacamole speckled with cilantro. The sour cream adds a cooling contrast, and no lettuce to get in the way.

Then there's the salsa lineup. The orange, emulsified salsa was our favorite, flecked with dried chilies and maybe chile de árbol. The green salsa is vinegary and surprisingly hot for a Verde. The fresh red salsa? It's fine. But fine doesn't cut it when your competition is packing this much heat.

While we waited for our order, a guy who looked like he'd taken a wrong turn from a farmer's market was really enjoying the salsa offerings. He sat there, jamming his thumb into his burrito, squirting large amounts of salsa verde from a bottle into his burrito cavity before taking a bite.

Outside? A different story. This is the shopping center with Foods Co. and where Walgreens used to be. They took the letters off the building, but you can still read what it says. We peeked through the windows of the empty drugstore. The shelves were empty, but the lights were still on, so there was probably still a lot of copper to be had.

By midweek, the scene feels desolate, with hollowed-out stores and the occasional lone figure shuffling. Yet people still linger, milling about, chatting in parked cars, and filling the mostly empty parking lots with quiet activity.

The burrito, though? It rises above all of it. This burrito, a hefty 691 grams of deliciousness, is a steal at only $12.38. And it doesn't come alone – it's accompanied by thick chips that look and taste like they are made in-house.

Take a bite, let the flavors do their thing, and appreciate another gem on the Richmond Burrito Trail.
