Leaving Home Depot without a cart filled with impulse purchases felt like a win, but the real victory was starting the day with a warm burrito from Kelly's Deli.

We were out and about and getting hungry when we decided to stop by Kelly’s Deli for a breakfast burrito. We recently read the deli offers the sixth-best breakfast burrito in the area, according to The San Francisco Chronicle, and we decided to stop in and find out.

Kelly’s Deli is the snack bar-looking food place outside many Bay Area Home Depot locations. We never realized they have burritos, but they do, and we ate one— a hot and spicy one filled with chorizo.

It was still early. Dudes were loading lumber on pickup trucks, struggling to push heavy carts loaded down with hundreds of pounds of cement bags, and others were waiting, their days shaped by the ebb and flow of opportunity.

The scene at Home Depot set the tone for the morning: industrious and hard-working. Amid the rattling carts and hum of the freeway, we turned our focus to the burrito — our own personal project. It was time to see if Kelly’s Deli could deliver the same hardworking satisfaction as the crews outside.

Look, this burrito is fine. Temperature-wise, this thing comes out piping hot. It’s satisfying in the way most burritos are, but it doesn’t reach the heights of greatness. The chorizo brings the heat and is packed with smoky paprika, garlic, and chile flavors. Its finely crumbled texture works well, though it’s a bit repetitive.

Chorizo Breakfast Burrito
Kelly’s Deli Chorizo Breakfast Burrito is the second breakfast burrito on the Richmond Burrito Trail.

The potatoes of the shredded hash browns variety had us momentarily worried we were served rice in a breakfast burrito. Specks of scrambled eggs dotted the interior, so we got lots of small bits of the same texture.

While a smidge of sour cream attempts to add moisture, the burrito leans dry overall. We’d expected, dare we say, we’re looking forward to that bit of greasy chorizo goodness.

We finished the 593-gram burrito, which sustained us through a full day of meetings. We weren’t hungry again until late afternoon. The burrito costs $13, so it’s a bit much for what you get.

We've enjoyed breakfast burritos at Angel's Restaurant and 3 Hermanas that were packed with potatoes and creamy eggs, but Kelly's didn't quite compare to either of those.

It was a cold morning, but we were motivated to venture out into the world and find something warm and tasty. A sandwich board placed on the sidewalk out front lured us in, so we dashed inside Angel’s Restaurant on San Pablo Avenue in the burgeoning North and East Foodie District.
On the Richmond Burrito Trail: 3 Hermanas Mexican Home Cooking
At 3 Hermanas Mexican Home Cooking on San Pablo Avenue, we were once informed that burritos weren’t real Mexican food. We were picking up a breakfast burrito after groggily making our way to this tiny restaurant that cozied up to Rose & Mike’s Liquors after a very long day

Still, starting your day with a burrito — even one with minor flaws — is never a bad choice.
