La Guerita Taqueria opened a few weeks ago in Richmond's Hilltop neighborhood, generating excitement amongst those who are always on the hunt for new eats.

Though off the well-beaten taco truck path for some, La Guerita is worth checking out.

To get there, head to the mall, but instead of turning left like you have a million times, turn right. You’ll enter a small community bordering El Sobrante that is home to a large cemetery, a small strip mall, and a gas station.

La Guerita Taqueria is a large restaurant that was unfortunately empty when we showed up for a Super Burrito. The walls are painted red, and a neon sombrero wearing a burrito greets you with a thumbs up.

La Guerita Taqueria

It seems downright fancy compared to the rolling taquerias we tend to dine at in dusty parking lots.

La Guerita Taqueria is located in a small retail cluster next to a DNA paternity testing lab, so you can have a burrito while you wait to see if you have to skip town.

Once we reached the counter, the friendly order taker mentioned she liked the steak, so we ordered it. We always seek advice on what to order.

The saucy steak-centric Super Carne Asada Burrito was loaded with a nice mix of ingredients in the Mission Style. The steak was finely chopped, with some nice color, and well spiced. The super slab comes with rice, cheese, sour cream, and refried beans, but every bite had some steak.

We found some unhappy cold pockets of sour cream and unmelted cheese. The rice was a little mushy, and we wished for more beans – and for the tortilla to spend some more time on the grill. However, we were gifted with a satisfying carne asada burrito.

Hilltop’s La Guerita Taqueria serves a tasty Super Carne Asada slab with plenty of meat.

The Super Carne Asada slab weighed 623 grams and came with pickled cabbage and salsa. At $14.27, it just slipped under the 15-dollar barrier.

The Richmond Burrito Trails tends to dine at taquerias near Grandview HQ, but we are always ready and willing to travel to the far reaches of our city for a tasty burrito. Let us know where to eat next!
