El Trompudo Tacos Shop on busy San Pablo Dam Road was doing brisk business when we stopped in last week for a Carne Asada Burrito.

The taqueria is located in a small, brightly colored orange building next to the Pedaler Bike Shop, so you can have a burrito while you wait for your bike to get tuned up. Did we venture outside of Richmond proper and into El Sobrante? Maybe — but the borders are a little murky.

The interior is cheerfully decorated with a small dining area and an enclosed patio section. You can still see hints of the restaurant’s former life as a Subway sandwich location. Despite the passage of time, a map of old New York is visible behind the framed photos on the wall. The tile work at the counter still sports Subway veggies, and paint choices still have an “eat fresh” vibe. We grabbed our ruler and got in line.

We ordered a big and beefy Carne Asada Burrito filled with tender steak, creamy refried beans, rice, pico de gallo, cheese, and a little too much sour cream. El Trompudo delivers on its promises of authentic, high-quality Jalisco-style Mexican food.

The tortilla was nicely grilled, and the stringy, melty cheese made us happy with every bite. The cilantro flavor really comes through with this slab. The ingredient mix was awesome, with just enough rice and beans. The Carne Asada Burrito was a big, filling bad boy weighing 734 grams, but it did not best Tacos Las Palmas’ 804-gram wonder.

On the Richmond Burrito Trail: Tacos Las Palmas We’ve crossed the 800-gram line with Tacos Las Palmas’s Super Al Pastor Burrito, the largest burrito we’ve eaten on the Richmond Burrito Trail.

We ate the whole saucy happiness and enjoyed ourselves doing so. We were full and content and felt that if we never ate again, it would be totally fine. The burritos come with chips and salsa, of which four varieties are available. The Carne Asada, along with a veggie burrito companion, cost just $26.27.

The Richmond Burrito Trail will return next week with another burrito from an as-yet-to-be-determined location.
