On the Richmond Burrito Trail: a bean-centric bite at Taqueria Los Cerros

We were picking up some necessities when we spotted the neon sign advertising burritos in Taqueria Los Cerros’ window around lunchtime, so we went in for a munchie-worthy wrap.

Los Cerros is a taquería at the northern end of the Richmond Parkway in the same shopping center as Richmond Kebab & Gyros and some sort of healing center. To make it confusing, another hill-like Taqueria is in El Sobrante, Los Cerros Mexican Grill.

Taqueria Los Cerros gets mixed reviews online, with several complaining about a Rude Server. One Yelper wrote that the lady who takes your order looks at you with a face like her stomach hurts, and then she brings your food with the same stank face. Anyway, we walked in for our Taqueria Tuesday Trip and prepared to meet Stank Face.

There was just one customer inside, and she was heading for the door with a large bag of to-go goodies. We stepped up to the counter and pretended to contemplate what to order to take in the whole scene. An extensive menu is prominently displayed above the counter, complemented by terracotta tiles, potted plants, and a huge wall mural.

Our order taker stepped up. We didn’t know if this was the Woman With A Face Like Her Stomach Hurts, but she started giving us the business with a sly grin, signaling her facade was all in fun.

We ordered a Grilled Chicken Super Burrito, and soon, the lord of the wraps was at work at the rolling station, conjuring our burrito from mere ingredients.

Taqueria Los Cerros’ Grilled Chicken Super Burrito is a bean-centric burrito with big chunks of chicken. The burrito is filled with tons of delicious refried beans, and the cheese melts into a nice gooeyness that we get excited about. The beans are the best part of the burrito. Seriously, give us a bucket of these beans and a spoon, and we will be happy.

The Spanish rice was nicely cooked and flavored and played well with the beanie cheesiness. Unfortunately, the sizable chicken chunks were bland and almost unseasoned, and the tasty spicy red sauce couldn’t overcome them.

Guacamole and sour cream round out the 620-gram burrito. At $14.08, Los Cerros had trouble stacking up against the premium strain of burritos we’ve come to expect on the Richmond Burrito Trail.

Let us know where to eat next, and check back next week for another stop on the Richmond Burrito Trail.
