Iconic Annie’s Annuals lives on as staff launches Curious Flora Nursery
Annie’s Annuals and Perennials, a beloved horticultural hub known for rare and heirloom plants that abruptly closed earlier this month, has found a new owner. Meanwhile, a group of Annie’s staff has formed Curious Flora Nursery, which will operate at Annie’s former Richmond location and open for business on November 2.
Curious Flora’s Chief Growing Officer Colleen Wheeler said the nursery will continue to grow the native and far-flung curiosities that have defined Bay Area gardens for decades.
“Sensational gardens and great nurseries are so much more than the plants that fill them. They evoke stories of people and place told over seasons of growing together,” Wheeler said in a statement on the Annie’s Annuals website.
“The best gardens and nurseries reflect the joy of discovery, the reward of shared effort, and the wonder of changing times. Annie planted a seed of exuberance in each of us. We’re going to keep that growing,” Wheeler said.
Curious Flora Nursery will operate at the existing nursery at 740 Market Avenue in Richmond. According to the statement, Annie’s Annuals online store will offer plants by mail before the Spring 2025 season.
Grass Valley-based Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply has acquired Annie’s brand, website, and catalog. Customers will continue to purchase from Annie’s Annuals through its website.
Jill Hageman, who co-owns Peaceful Valley, expressed her dedication to preserving and celebrating the nursery’s legacy.
“Our vision is to ensure customers continue to access the unique native, annual, and perennial plants that have made Annie’s an iconic name,” Hageman said.
