Catalytic converter thefts in Richmond have surged 58 percent in the past 90 days, prompting officials to urge residents to take precautions.
Catalytic converters, which contain valuable metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium, are a frequent target for thieves. Hybrid vehicles, which have catalytic converters with higher concentrations of these metals, are particularly at risk.
According to Richmond Police Department Crime Prevention Manager Michelle, catalytic converter theft and robberies are on the rise.
"Citywide during the past 90 days, Catalytic Converter theft increased 58 percent," Milam said.
For many victims, the first sign of a stolen catalytic converter is their car's loud, rumbling noise when they start it in the morning. When a converter is cut off a car, the exhaust system is left open, producing an unmistakable sound that signals a costly repair.
Residents have posted about losing their converters on social media and neighborhood message boards, asking for surveillance footage to help identify suspects and expressing frustration with the loss.
Authorities recommend several measures to help deter theft:
Visit Your Local Muffler Shop: Many muffler shops offer aftermarket cages that can be installed to secure your catalytic converter, making it significantly more difficult for thieves to steal.
Weld It On: Ask your mechanic about welding the catalytic converter to the vehicle frame. This added security measure makes it harder for anyone to simply unbolt it and drive away.
Etching & Marking: Engrave your VIN or a unique identifying number onto your catalytic converter. This not only deters thieves but also helps law enforcement track stolen parts.
Park Smart: Whenever possible, park your vehicle in well-lit areas or in your garage. Thieves are less likely to target a vehicle that is visible and has a higher risk of being seen.
Join Together: Keep an eye on your neighbors’ vehicles and report any suspicious activity. The more we look out for each other, the safer our community will be!
Police are urging residents to stay vigilant and protect their automobiles.
"By taking these proactive steps, you can help safeguard your vehicle and reduce the risk of catalytic converter theft," police said. "If you have any questions or need further assistance, don't hesitate to reach out to your Richmond Police Department."
Milam said the city has also seen a 26 percent increase in robberies over the same period.
