Authorities identify man killed in Carlson Boulevard hit-and-run
A 56-year-old man, identified as Prentiss Jackson, was killed early Sunday in a hit-and-run collision while riding a bike on Carlson Boulevard near Bayview Avenue, according to authorities.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on December 8, when firefighters from Station 64 responded to a walk-in report of a vehicle crash. Upon arrival, firefighters found a single vehicle had veered off the roadway, crashing into barrier fencing and dense shrubbery. The driver and any occupants had fled the scene before emergency crews arrived.
Firefighters discovered Jackson, believed to have been riding a bicycle, trapped beneath the wreckage of the vehicle and entangled with fencing material. Despite a 25-minute extrication effort involving additional resources from Engine 67, Rescue 67, and El Cerrito Engine 71, Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene due to traumatic injuries.
A steel fence post was found lodged through the driver’s side window of the vehicle, narrowly missing any occupants. Fire officials noted the accident could have been much worse as the car narrowly missed striking an occupied homeless encampment.
“This is a very sad and unfortunate event,” said Richmond Firefighters Local 188 in a statement, urging drivers to be aware of pedestrians, especially on area roadways.
Lynnelle Sanchez, Richmond Police Department Public Information Officer, said the collision is currently being investigated as a hit-and-run, and police are working to identify the vehicle's driver.
“Preliminary information indicates that the victim who was pronounced deceased on the scene is transient and was riding a bicycle at the time of the collision,” Sanchez said. “We have not determined if the victim was a member of the nearby homeless encampment.”
