According to the Richmond Police Department, a watchful community and Richmond officers' swift teamwork helped stop an apparent car theft ring early Wednesday morning. Five stolen vehicles were recovered, and two suspects were arrested.

At approximately 2:15 a.m., Richmond police responded to a report of suspicious activity in the 4400 block of Fieldcrest Drive. Witnesses reported seeing a group of individuals abandon two vehicles and flee the scene in a separate car. When officers arrived, they found the two vehicles left behind, unoccupied.

“Officers had an instinct that something unusual was happening, and this was not a valet service operation, so they decided to wait and see if the suspects would return with additional vehicles to ‘valet,” police said.

Their instincts proved correct. The suspects returned for a third time, speeding past officers to drop off two more vehicles before bolting from the scene on foot.

“As officers moved in, the suspects bailed out of the cars and fled on foot. A quick-thinking team pursued and apprehended two suspects, ending this bizarre game of vehicular musical chairs,” police said.
